Why Dirty Dancing works

Everyone pictures the same thing. That's the head start.

Say the words to a room of twenty women and every one of them sees a version of the same summer: the practice studio, the rolled hips, the walk down the middle of a crowded floor. Nobody needs the theme explaining, so the choreographer can spend her first ten minutes teaching instead of selling. That familiarity is why it sits so high on our hen party dance class list, particularly for groups where the bride's mum is coming and would quite like a say.

Ours is a group routine inspired by the film rather than a reconstruction of it, and there are no partners involved — everyone learns the same material facing the same way, which removes the awkward business of pairing people off. The vocabulary is mambo-flavoured: weight shifting through the hips, a slow travelling walk, a shoulder roll, a couple of turns and a finish the whole room hits together. What we don't teach is the lift. It takes months of training and proper matting to do safely, so the finale is built to land without it, and groups tend to find the ending stronger for being something all of them can actually do. Groups who like the Latin side of it often go on to look at our salsa hen party class, while those after the ballroom glamour end up on Strictly.

It's a comfortable pick for a wide Sheffield guest list — sultry in tone, entirely clothed in practice, and gentle enough that nobody sits it out. We run it in a studio we hire in Sheffield city centre, handy for the station and for wherever you're eating afterwards, or we'll come to your group's house or Peak District cottage if there's floor to work with. Dresses, heels or a wig if you want the look; costumes, shoes and props are all yours to bring, never ours. A good few brides come back later for first dance lessons having caught the bug here.

Where the £175 goes

Every Dirty Dancing hen gets all of this.

Groups tend to take the ninety minutes so the hip work has time to settle before the run-throughs start. The only additional cost is hiring the room, which we sort and confirm up front.

Hour by hour

How the Dirty Dancing session runs.

Ninety-minute workshop£175
One-hour class£150

The first stretch is all about weight. Standing on the spot, transferring from one foot to the other until the hips start moving on their own — which for most people takes about four minutes and a fair amount of laughing. Once that's in, the choreographer adds the mambo timing over the top and the room suddenly sounds like it knows what it's doing.

Next comes travel: the long rolling walk, a turn, a shoulder roll, and a short section that pairs people up only if the group wants that. The end of the session is the routine assembled and run properly, bride out front for the last eight counts, and on the ninety-minute booking there's room to go again with phones up. No lift features at any point. Beyond that, nothing here is fixed — the running order bends to the group in the room, and the choreographer decides the shape on the day.

Once the music stopped

What the group said on the way out.

My mum, my two aunties and eight of my friends, and every single one of them was still dancing at the end. She said upfront there'd be no lift and honestly none of us missed it.

I'd braced myself for something cringey and it wasn't at all. It's a proper dance class with a very good soundtrack, and my hips ached for two days.

Hips. Who knew.

Booked the hour and immediately wished we'd taken the ninety minutes, because we ran out of time to film it more than once. Everything else about the afternoon was spot on.

Dirty Dancing questions

The questions that come up every time.

1Do you teach the lift from Dirty Dancing?

We don't, and we won't offer to. Doing it safely takes months of training and proper matting, neither of which belongs in a ninety-minute hen session. The routine is built to finish strongly without it, so nothing feels missing.

2Does anyone need a partner for the Dirty Dancing class?

No. It's taught as a group routine with everyone facing the same way, so no one gets left standing while pairs form. If the group is keen we can add a short paired section, but it's offered rather than expected.

3What music do you use for a Dirty Dancing hen party?

Usually something with a mambo or eighties soundtrack feel — the obvious choices from the film are a common starting point, but nothing is locked in. Tell us what the bride would want to hear and the choreographer will work with it on the day.

4Is the class too raunchy for the bride's mum?

Not in the slightest. It's sultry in style and entirely clothed in practice — hip movement, attitude and a bit of eye contact rather than anything anyone would blush at. Mums and future mothers-in-law regularly turn out to be the best in the room.

5What should we wear for the Dirty Dancing class?

Something you can turn and move your hips in, with flat shoes or bare feet for grip. A few groups bring seventies-style dresses or a curly wig for the photos, which is entirely up to you — we supply no costumes, shoes or props of any kind.

6Which room do we actually dance in, and can you come to us?

In a studio we hire in Sheffield city centre, minutes from the station and easily reached from the hotels around the Peace Gardens; the address goes out once your date is confirmed. We use two hired venues: Bailey Street (S1 4EH) near West Street, and Surrey Street (S1 2LG) beside the Peace Gardens, and yours is confirmed with the date. Groups staying together elsewhere, including out towards the Peak District, can have us travel to them.
