Why groups pick it

Two characters, and everyone knows which one they are.

Half the appeal is settled before anybody has moved: there's an Elphaba in the group and there's a Glinda, and the rest of the party has strong opinions about who is which. That gives the choreographer something to build on immediately, which is rarer than it sounds. Musical-theatre movement is generous stuff — the arms travel, the shapes are held, the whole thing is designed to be legible from the back of a big room — so it flatters a mixed-ability hen party better than almost anything else on our hen party dance class list. Nobody needs quick feet. What it needs is people willing to reach.

Most Sheffield groups take the split: one half in green with the sharper, grounded material, the other half sweeping about in pink, then the two lines coming together for a proper full-company ending. If your party would rather stay as one block, that works just as well. Which numbers the session draws on is discussed with your group on the day rather than pinned down here, though the choreographer will always ask beforehand whether there's one the bride can't do without. Green face paint, sparkly capes and pointed hats are yours to bring — we don't supply costumes, props or footwear. Anyone enjoying the theatre end of things should also look at our broader musicals theme or the sharper, sassier SIX the Musical class.

It's a natural fit for hen weekends already built around a night at the Lyceum, for brides who did school productions and never quite let go, and for groups where two people will sing louder than the speakers. If the taste sticks, our weekly dance classes run all year a few minutes from the same studios.

The shape of it

Ninety minutes, curtain up to curtain call.

Things begin with posture and reach rather than steps, because musical theatre lives in the upper half of the body and a group that learns to extend properly in the first ten minutes looks twice as good by the end. The opening section is deliberately grand and deliberately easy — a walk, a lift of the arms, a turn of the head on a count — and it gives the choreographer a chance to spot who is holding back and quietly bring them forward.

The middle stretch is where the two sides usually appear, each learning material with its own flavour before they get woven back together. Then everything points at the ending: rows arranged, a build, the bride positioned wherever she'd rather be, and the whole company hitting the last shape at the same time. The extra half hour buys the rehearsal that makes that land, plus two complete run-throughs so there's a clean video and a messy one. All of which is the usual pattern rather than a promise — the session is shaped on the day around the group in front of us.

After the curtain call

The company's verdict, make-up off.

We split green and pink and it turned into a full-blown rivalry within about four minutes. The Wicked finale, with both halves together and every one of us reaching for the ceiling, is the best photo we have from the whole wedding year.

Booked it before a show that evening and it was exactly the right amount of theatre for the afternoon. Nobody was worn out and everybody had something to talk about at dinner.

Wicked, answered

What organisers ask us about Wicked.

1Do we have to split into Elphaba and Glinda sides?

It's offered, not imposed. Most groups love the split because it gives everyone a side to be loyal to and makes the ending feel bigger, but plenty prefer to stay as one company the whole way through. Let us know which suits your party and the routine gets built accordingly.

2Which Wicked songs will we be dancing to?

That gets agreed with your group rather than fixed in advance, and the choreographer will ask early on whether there's one the bride would be gutted to miss. Expect the big well-known numbers to feature, but nothing is written in stone before the day.

3Can we sing along during the Wicked class?

You will, whether or not you plan to. Nobody is being assessed on the singing and no one is asked to perform solo, but the volume tends to climb steadily once the group knows the routine. It is not a quiet ninety minutes.

4Do we need green face paint and capes?

Costumes are entirely your call and only matter for the photos. We don't supply costumes, props or shoes, so anything themed comes from your side — a green top for one half, pink for the other, is plenty. Leggings and trainers are what the dancing actually wants.

5Is this affiliated with the stage show or the film?

No. The class is inspired by the story and the music, with all choreography created by our own teachers and no connection to the production, the studio or anyone involved in it. You're booking our version of that world for a hen party.

6Where in Sheffield does the Wicked hen class run?

In a studio we hire in Sheffield city centre, close to the theatres, the station and the Peace Gardens, with the exact address sent through once your date is confirmed. Both hired rooms are central: Bailey Street (S1 4EH) and Surrey Street (S1 2LG) — your confirmation carries the address for your date. If you're all staying somewhere with room to dance, in town or over towards the Peak District, we can come to you instead.
